Apply for a Thai Visa

NOTICE: ALL WORK PERMITS & VISAS REQUIRE A THAI PRODUCTION COMPANY TO SPONSOR AND APPLY.

Filmmakers, journalists, and other creators for other forms of media that contemplate working in Thailand need to apply for a proper visa. Well, here’s a short guide to understand how to get it done.

Visa Options

Your project dictates the type of visa you will apply for, either a tourist or a non-immigrant visa. If your project goes on for about 15 days or more, then only the Non-Immigrant Visa type ‘M’ or Media Visa will be able to grant you permission to work. Media and film crew visas are issued for 90 days upon receipt.

Documents Required

In order to apply for the media visa, you will be required to provide the following:

  • A completed visa application form with two recent photographs (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
  • A passport that is valid for at least six months.
  • Additional requirements for film crews:
  • Permit letter from the Department of Tourism.
  • Letter of reference from the coordinating agency in Thailand.
  • Copy of the Thai coordinator’s ID card or passport.
  • The application fee – the price differs at every embassy.

Important notes

  • Supplementary documents may be requested, interviews may be conducted, and in some cases visa applications may be rejected without result, with evidence provided. The Royal Thai Embassy therefore reserves the right to initiate the process. Thus, visa fees are not subject for a refund.
  • Visa runs, as of May 2014, are no longer allowed in Thailand, so if you stay longer than the validity of your tourist visa, you must apply for the appropriate visa type to enter Thailand again.
