Thailand supplies several grants to help international filmmakers to get started. Below is a list of all government-approved grants available in the country.

1. Thailand Soft Power Film Grant

The Ministry of Culture provides financial support to Thai filmmakers for the development, production, and promotion of their films. This type of grant is limited to Thai nationals and Thai co-productions.

The fund supplies the following grant types:

  • Production grants
  • Development grants
  • Marketing and promotional grants for local and international festivals

2. Film Production Tax Incentive

Managed by the Thailand Film Office, this grant offers attractive rebates on eligible production costs for foreign productions shooting in the country. Thailand supplies a cash rebate of up to 30% plus additional incentives when certain conditions are met.

  • Gain an extra 5% on top by employing Thai nationals in key team positions
  • Gain an extra 5% on productions promoting tourism, Soft Power, and show Thailand in a positive light
  • Gain an extra 3% on productions filmed in designated provinces as listed by the Thailand Film Office
  • Gain an extra 3% on productions that complete post-production in Thailand

There is no cap, no cultural test required. Filmmakers will get their filming permit in just 10 days.

2. Private Grants and Subsidies

1. Location Scouting Support Program

Thailand features a team of excellent location scouters to help you find the perfect backdrop for your next project. Our location scouting team offers producers a comparative evaluation of each location. The program’s goal is to attract foreign productions to Thailand, assisting in the employment of Thai crew and contributing to the development and improvement of local crews.

Requirements:

  • A budget of over a million dollars
  • Planning to shoot within the next year

Benefits:

  • Scout suitable filming locations for your TV and film projects for 2 weeks at no cost.
  • Scout during the pre-production stage of film and television projects that have been approved to film in Thailand.

2. Post-production Subsidy

Actively participate in international collaborations between filmmakers from different countries. These partnerships can result in financial support, sharing resources, and both parties benefiting from the agreement.

There are various private post-production subsidies available in Thailand. Moreover, it is also one of the add-on criteria for maximizing the tax rebate provided by the Thai government.

3. Co-production Agreements

Filmmakers will have the opportunity to work alongside filmmakers from different countries.

By actively participating in international collaborations, filmmakers and their crew can receive beneficial financial support, resources, and additional perks from the host country.

4. Loans or Investments

Some regions in Thailand may offer production companies low-interest loans or investments to production companies in exchange for profit sharing.

5. Cash Grants

Local governments may provide direct cash payments to producers or the production company to help cover the cost of film production.

These grants might be offered based on factors such as creating local jobs or money spent in the region.

About the Commission

The Thailand Film Office (TFO), situated under the Department of Tourism, Mystery of Tourism and Sports is Thailand’s only government unit responsible for foreign film production in Thailand.

The establishment of the TFO aims to promote the country as a premier destination for filming in Southeast Asia, boasting a top-notch infrastructure that invites foreign productions to shoot across the country’s vibrant cities across all provinces.

Furthermore, the commission provides attractive incentives directed at foreign productions to help save on production costs while fulfilling incentives. Foreign productions can earn up to 30% in cash incentives, on top of additional rebates available.

The Thailand Film Office is responsible for granting permits to foreign productions and monitoring shoots to ensure Thailand’s image is not adversely affected.

The commission aims to collaborate and assist government agencies and private sectors to enhance foreign film production and improve convenience, and exceptional services.
